Finance Associate · Semi Qualified US CMA

I didn't come from finance. I came for it.

While most people talk about wanting a finance career, I spent a year quietly building one — managing $50,000+ in monthly expenses, negotiating a $14,000 tax liability into a $350/month plan, and blocking a $10,000 fraud attempt in real time, for a New York healthcare company.

01 — About

The story
behind the numbers

I was a designer who fell in love with the language of money.

For five years, I created things that looked good — brands, visuals, campaigns. I was good at it. But I kept finding myself more interested in the business behind the work. How did this company make money? Where were they bleeding? Why was this project funded and that one wasn't?

"That curiosity pulled me into finance. Not through a textbook first — through a job."

I joined Gaba Telepsychiatry as a graphic designer and within months had moved into their finance department, managing the full financial operations of a US healthcare company — remotely from India.

In my first year, I recovered over $2,000 in vendor overcharges, negotiated a $14,000 NYC tax liability into a structured payment plan, and blocked a $10,000 fraud attempt by coordinating with the bank in real time.

Now I'm building the theoretical foundation to match. I've passed US CMA Part 1 and I'm continuing toward the full credential — because I want to understand not just how to manage money, but how to make strategic decisions with it.

What I've
actually done

Real work. Real numbers. Real consequences.

$10K
Fraud Blocked in Real Time
Identified a $10,000 unauthorised transaction attempt, immediately coordinated with the bank and vendor to freeze the payment before it cleared. Zero loss to the company. This wasn't in my job description — I acted because I understood the consequence of not acting.
Risk Management
$14K
Tax Liability Restructured
Rather than paying the full $14,000 NYC tax balance and straining cash flow, negotiated a structured $350/month payment plan with the tax authority. Preserved operating capital while maintaining full compliance.
Tax Negotiation

Overcharges Recovered
Through proactive invoice auditing and vendor follow-up, recovered $1,500–$2,600 in overcharges and $500–$600 in pro-rata refunds for discontinued services — money that would otherwise have gone unnoticed.

04 — CMA Journey

Becoming
CMA certified

🎓
Why CMA, not CA or CPA?
The CMA focuses on management accounting and financial decision-making — not just compliance and audit. I want to understand how finance drives business strategy, how to evaluate performance, and how to advise on resource allocation. The CMA is the credential for people who want to be in the room where decisions are made, not just the room where the books are balanced.
